Q&A with Sisca Dunworth — Owner of Indomarket and ACF Beneficiary

Published: 17/08/22 | CATEGORY: Case Study | AUTHOR: ACF

If you’ve ever searched for Indonesian products, you’ve likely come across Indomarket — and Indonesian supermarket in the UK. Based in Swansea, the company was founded by Sisca Dunworth; an ACF beneficiary who accessed our services to start and grow her now thriving business.

Selling everything from sauces and spices, to fabric, arts and crafts — Indomarket is a true treasure trove. Its mission? To provide Indonesians with access to the foods they know and love, and to introduce a whole new generation of people to the rich cuisine and culture of Indonesia.

With a busy Indomarket schedule, we’re grateful to have caught up Sisca to discuss her ACF experience.

Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and your business?

My name is Sisca Dunworth. I come from Indonesia and was born in Balikpapan, East Borneo. I’ve been promoting Indonesian culture In Wales for 12 years, and I thought, why am I not starting a business selling Indonesian products? I started an online shop, Indomarket, in 2021 during the pandemic so people could get Indonesian products easier.

What encouraged you to join ACF? What does ACF offer that made us the right organisation to support you?

I was thinking of studying business at university to improve my knowledge about business. I spoke with my friend who was studying a business PhD at Cardiff Uni, and she showed me the programme run by ACF. I took the course for 10 weeks.

ACF teaches and encourages you to develop business plans and strategies, and helps improve your skills. They help you with Business Wales, and offer interest-free financial support.

What barriers did you face when trying to start your own business, prior to ACF support?

Having to learn about so many things! From exporting and importing products, choosing the right products to sell for the UK market, and learning about marketing strategies. (I still learn about new things everyday!).

How did you find the ACF process?

It was easy and simple to follow.

What did you find most helpful / useful about ACF?

Having continuous support from the ACF community. If I need help, they will always guide me to do the right course to improve my knowledge about my business.

What are the best parts of running your own business?

Networking — I meet new people, and go from festival to festival.

Would you encourage others to apply for ACF support? And if so, why?

Yes. Everyone there has different skills and can help you learn about business.

What are your tips for someone who wants to start their own business?

Find your passion. My passion is promoting Indonesian products.
